Josef Fischer produces wines from Wachau, Austria's most celebrated white-wine region in the Danube Valley. The winery focuses on two varieties native to the steep terraced vineyards of Niederösterreich: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kreuzberg, made from low-yielding vines on prime south-facing slopes, displays the mineral precision and white-pepper character typical of top Wachau expressions. The Riesling Smaragd offerings—Ried Steiger and the Privat selection—show the region's signature balance of stone-fruit intensity and crisp acidity, with the mineral-driven complexity that emerges from Wachau's ancient granite and gneiss soils. Smaragd, the highest classification in the Wachau's three-tier system, denotes wines of full ripeness and concentration. These wines have been assessed by Wine Advocate, Decanter, Falstaff, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast.
