The Wine Thief operates in Swartland, the Western Cape's dynamic inland region known for bold, mineral-driven wines from old-vine parcels. The winery works with varieties that thrive in Swartland's warm, dry climate and granite soils: Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Portuguese grapes like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca. The Mourvèdre shows the region's capacity for structured, savory reds. Costa del Swart Cinsault captures the lighter, spicy character Swartland coaxes from this traditionally southern French variety. Nooer, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca, reflects the winery's exploration of Iberian varieties in a South African context. These wines have been assessed by Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, and Decanter. Swartland itself has emerged as a source of distinctive, terroir-driven expression—moving beyond the region's earlier bulk-wine reputation to produce wines of genuine complexity and individuality.
