Vieux Château Certan sits on the Pomerol plateau next to Pétrus, and its blend leans more on Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon than most of the appellation — giving the wines an aromatic frame that ages on a different curve from Merlot-only Pomerol. Two bottlings only: the grand vin and La Gravette de Certan as the second wine. Five prestige critics rate the grand vin most years, with Decanter scoring recent releases in the low to mid 90s. The grand vin needs fifteen to twenty years before the structure resolves; La Gravette drinks earlier.
