Crego e Monaguillo
Crego e Monaguillo works the steep, granite-based slopes of Monterrei in Galicia's far south, where Atlantic influence and altitude shape wines of mineral precision. The winery centers on Mencía, the region's signature red—a variety that thrives in these conditions, yielding wines with dark fruit, structure, and the savory depth Monterrei is known for. Their Mencía bottling stands as the flagship expression. Father 1943, a blend of Tempranillo and Mencía, and Rectoral del Monaguillo Monterrei, which adds Merenzao to that core pair, show how the winery layers complexity across its range. All three have been assessed by Wine Advocate, Decanter, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast. The wines reflect a terroir where cool nights and demanding vineyard work produce reds built for the table rather than the trophy case.
