Abruzzo Gave Its Rosé an Appellation Before Anyone Else in Italy

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is not a lighter version of the region's red. It comes off the same vines, on the same picking day, from the same grape. What changes is how long the juice sits on the skins: roughly a day, against the fortnight or more a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo gets. Abruzzo made that difference official in 2010, when Cerasuolo walked out of the red wine's rulebook and became a denomination of its own, the first in Italy written for a rosé and nothing else.

Montepulciano earns the separate rulebook. Its skins are loaded with anthocyanin, the pigment that gives red wine its colour, and they give it up quickly. One day of contact pulls out a deep cherry hue and a real grip of tannin, which is why Cerasuolo pours the colour of a light red and behaves like one on the palate. Provençal rosé is built the opposite way, with the juice run off the skins almost immediately to keep it pale. Same shelf in the shop, completely different piece of engineering.

Valentini, the estate at Loreto Aprutino that ferments without selected yeasts and sells off in bulk whatever it decides not to bottle, treats its Cerasuolo as a first wine rather than an offcut. Decanter has taken that pink wine to 96 points. The same estate's Montepulciano tops out at 97. One point separates the rosé from one of central Italy's most hunted reds, and nobody lands that close by accident.

That appetite for drawing lines has since spread across the region. In 2023 Abruzzo rewrote all four of its denominations around provincial subzones, Colline Teramane among them, and added a Superiore tier with tighter yields and a longer wait before release. For a place whose name spent decades on the back label of tanker-blended supermarket red, that is a lot of new vocabulary to defend.

Which leaves a buying rule that runs against instinct. Pink wine from a serious Abruzzo producer is not the bottle to serve very cold and forget about by August. Tiberio's Cerasuolo has been scored at 94 by Vinous, and wine at that level carries enough acid and tannin to hold for several years in bottle and enough weight to sit beside lamb rather than salad. Buy it as a red that happens to be pink, and the summer-wine question stops applying.
