A Toast to North Carolina's Rich Wine Heritage and Culinary Connections
Nestled in the easternmost part of the United States, North Carolina is a land of diverse beauty, brimming with history, culture, and a vibrant wine scene. As a Wine Genealogist, I am thrilled to delve into the rich tapestry of North Carolina's vinous offerings and the delectable culinary connections that bind them.
North Carolina, home to the Outer Banks, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Piedmont region, is a part of no formal wine-growing appellation or sub-appellation. However, its rich heritage is evident in the growing number of wineries that have taken root across the state. The North Carolina wine industry proudly produces both White and Red wines, catering to a wide array of palates (Figure 1).

The grapes that thrive in this region are as diverse as the landscape itself. North Carolina wineries utilize native grape varieties such as Norton, Chambourcin, and Muscadine, alongside more popular international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay (Figure 2). This mix of local and international grapes results in a diverse range of wines that truly encapsulate the essence of North Carolina's unique terroir.

North Carolina's wines hold a deep connection to the region's culinary traditions. The whites produced here pair beautifully with a variety of dishes, including shellfish, lean fish, and appetizers and snacks. The crisp acidity and fruity notes of these wines complement the natural flavors found in seafood and lighter fare (Figure 3).

The region's red wines, characterized by bold flavors and robust tannins, are a perfect accompaniment to heartier dishes. Poultry, game meats such as venison and beef, and mature and hard cheese all benefit from the depth and complexity of North Carolina's red wines (Figure 4).
