A dot is the registered address of the business, usually the farm, not the vineyard plot. Non-diffusible records are counted and never drawn. Founding dates are the establishment’s registration date.

Femente’s database of professional critic scores. A producer is scored if any of its wines has a score from Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Vinous, Decanter, Wine Enthusiast or Falstaff, and is a 95-point producer if any of those scores is 95 to 100. Each publication scores through a team of reviewers, so a soft spot is the publication’s, not one person’s. A critic’s soft spot is the region whose share of its 95-point producers is highest relative to the six critics pooled (at least 15 producers); Vin de Pays and Vin de France are not counted as regions. Totals cover the whole French catalogue. The map draws producers whose location has at least three registered vine growers within a few kilometres; 2,448 pins failed that check (284 of them on a geocoder’s default point in the middle of France) and are being fixed.
